Your national insurance card contains a number, which is unique to you. You will need it when you work and it keeps track of your national insurance contributions. This card is sent to you just before you 16th birthday, so that once you turn 16 you can start working and paying NI contributions. You personal details, such as your address needs to be up to date at all times.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
If your names changes - for example, because you get married, you need to return your National Insurance card to your nearest benefits office. At this point you will need to reapply for a card in your new name.
Step2
If your address changes or you marital status changes, for example you become widowed, get married, divorced, register a civil partnership, dissolve a civil partnership or your civil partner dies, you will need to advise the benefits office as soon as possible.
Step3
If you lose you card you are only entitled to one free replacement, however if it is stolen you must notify the police in your report and then inform the benefit office.
Step4
It is important you notify the HMRC office immediately when your details change as it is this information they will have on record when they contact you about claiming state retirement pension.
