Things You'll Need:

  • get ready to an adventure of learn and learn and read and be social
  • Incorporate your company or simply get a ficticious name
  • have a computer, internet, web site, emails personalized with your domain name
  • fax, answering machine
  • assist to trade shows and seminars related to family like home shows, get to know people at your kids school or attend to any community events to get noticed and promote your business.
  1. Step 1

First is good to know about the travel business before jump into conclusions and think this is your dream come true, now I'm not saying is not profitable, but sometimes sacrifice of family time and invest in promotion is a little bit overwhelming for some persons, so the first thing is focus on what you want, you want to become a tour operator? or a meetings and incentives representative? or you just want to focus on vacations?

  2. Step 2

Once you decide what part of the travel business you want to get into, then you start to organize your tools, the knowledge about your target is primarily for example if you decide to work on vacations, then you want to get to know the Caribbean, have some studies of the culture, currency, politics and some important information to enhance the favorite spots for the tourist, also learn about Amadeus software will help you to learn how to become a member of the AIATA which is the important organization for travel agents, this is in the case you don't have it and want to start from scratch, once you have your membership, your target and your software knowledge then you are ready to start the business.

  3. Step 3

Check your house for a private area where you can have a table or desk for your office, this has to be organized with all the books magazines and anything you may need to work everyday.

set an schedule and stick on it, if you will work from 8am to 4pm then wake up early dress like you are going to your office and start to work, do the same everyday make a habit.

Answer your phone with the name of your business, have a web site with all the offers, destinations, photos, do some research, get some connections with some trade offices of some countries you work with, be creative organize a fam trip or a group for business and pleasure trips, like conventions in the Caribbean, register with the major tour operators of the countries your are working with, and most important learn, do a research work on your office, keep it organized use the software to keep your records, avoid papers, do a back up of your computer files, and never hesitate in update your web site.

Tips & Warnings
  • Promote your web site with some links of important information from the countries you offer.
  • Make your office your work place not your relax place
  • Get time to read your emails and answer them but if you will work mostly using your web site learn about promotion online there are both free and paid
  • Your office should be a place for you to enjoy when you enter and start a new day.
  • Travel business is not an easy business is very competitive but if you are creative you can improve the offers, make more attractive vacations packages, do some giveaways, invest in your customer, once you have the customer is good to offer something free like a t-shirt or cap or any promotional gift or something special for their room as a welcome drink on your behalf or an special card to thank you for the business, but most important is the excellence of your work to details and anticipate like you were the person who will be there in that vacation!
