The Smithsonian Institution is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It also has the largest collection of cultural artifacts with over 142 million objects, and only 2 percent are on display. Still, you need to plan your time well to see the highlights.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable Shoes
  • Time
  • Money for lunch

Step1
Smithsonian Castle Visit the Smithsonian Castle, located in the center of the National Mall. There are small exhibits showing a handful of objects from each of the 19 museums. You can ask volunteers any questions you may have inside the building. Also pick up a Go Smithsonian brochure, which has a map, local information, and a listing of current exhibits.
Step2
Smithsonian Carousel If you enjoy gardens, stroll around the Castle and the Arts and Industries buildings. Children also enjoy riding the carousel outside located on the Mall side of the castle.
Step3
Hope Diamond The most visited museums are the National Museum of Natural History, which houses the Hope Diamond, and the National Air and Space Museum. If you aren't into crowds, avoid these two museums and enjoy the National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of the American Indian, or National Museum of African Art. There are many other museums to choose from based on your interests.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prioritize your interests before you go so you can make the most of your time.
  • Food can be expensive on the National Mall, so be prepared.
  • Weekends and holidays often have excellent public programs and special events in the museums. Most are excellent for families.
  • There are also 2 museums located in NYC, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design, and the 2nd location of the National Museum of the American Indian.
  • The National Museum of American History is currently going through a massive renovation and won't be open until Summer 2008!!!! The National Air and Space Museum is hosting the highlights until it re-opens.
  • The National Zoo is not on the Mall, but you can take the Red Line on the Metro to the location.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays if you don't like crowds.
