Tired of kissing an ashtray? Tired of smelling smoke on your loved ones? Want to motivate them to quit smoking without them resenting you? This how-to article will demonstrate proven motivation techniques to encourage and motivate someone to kick the nasty habit of smoking, without worrying about antagonizing, nagging, and irritating them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • someone who is addicted to tobacco.
  • a genuine concern for their health.
  • a warm smile

Step1
Before trying to motivate someone to quit smoking you need to first understand why you want them to quit. There could be numerous reasons, but the only way you will be able to reach the smoker is to target the reasons which they care about. (i.e. if you don't like the smell of smoke, that is a good motivation for you to try to get them to quit, but It is a surefire way to be unsuccessful.)
Step2
Once you identify the reasons you want the smoker to quit, you are ready to formulate a game plan. Odds are, your reason is health. Your best bet is not to remind them constantly how dangerous it is. telling them once is enough. They now know that you care, and it is a reason they care about also.
Step3
Sit down for a one on one conversation where you explain your genuine concern, and demonstrate that the concern is coming for a good place. You will only be shooting yourself in the foot, if you talk about what bothers you, or constantly mention new studies and articles about the dangers.

Remember, Very very few smokers dont want to quit. However, if you antagonize them, and stigmatize the habit, they will naturally go on the defensive, and start resenting you. They know how dangerous it is, they just need the right encouragement and support to tackle the problem NOW.
Step4
Now, be understanding and explain in very clear terms, that you are genuinely concerned and are willing and prepared to do whatever it takes to help them fight the addiction.
This doesn't mean pushing them to see a hypnotist, or try the patch. This means laying the groundwork for them to come up with the idea.

Most smokers know the different methods, their holdback is a matter of motivation TODAY.

People respond much more positively when you allow them to formulate the idea or plan on their own.
Step5
Explain to them that you understand that it is difficult, and you dont want to put any pressure on them, but everyday you see them smoke you worry about them. Make them feel loved and accepted. Remain non-judgemental and open-minded.
Be Open... say, " I don't want to be nagging and reminding you every day, but I want you to always keep in mind, every cigarette you smoke, that it pains me."
Step6
After this conversation don't mention smoking again. Although you could give them a hurt look when you see them smoke.

Following these steps has helped thousands of loved ones kick the habit.

Smokers in general feel stigmatized by non-smokers, and as long as they are casted out, they will be hard-pressed to "give-in" to the non-smokers who pass judgment without genuine concern.

Remember, one conversation is enough. Your silence will force them to use their imagination to understand how you really feel, and they will revert back to your original conversation, and feel really bad. Trust me ,ask any smoker... This is the best way to reach them, and make the world a better healthier place.
Step7
REMEMBER: BE GENUINELY CONCERNED! This is the only way to reach the smoker effectively. If you are not genuinely concerned, but really want someone to quit, recruit someone who is GENUINELY CONCERNED, to follow the above process.

on 3/18/2008 I was a pack and a half a day smoker and quit smoking in one 30-minute treatment with laser therapy. I went to a company called Freedom Laser Therapy that provides a painfree low-level laser procedure which helps alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The staff at Freedom Laser Therapy is dedicated and passionate about helping smokers end their nicotine addiction.

I would really recommend laser therapy to help you quit smoking. Go to their locations page to find a Freedom Laser Therapy clinic or a local quit smoking laser therapy practionioner in your area. http://www.freedomlasertherapy.com
