How to Report Stolen Savings Bonds

Savings bonds, which are issued by the U.S. Treasury Department as a debt security for a loan to the government, are all registered to their bearers according to names, addresses and social security numbers. Therefore, it is easy to have stolen savings bonds replaced once they are properly reported.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the Bureau of Public Debt at (866) 388-1776. You will be mailed a form, called the PD F 1048E, which you can use to report lost, stolen or destroyed savings bonds.

    • 2

Fill out the form, have it notarized by a notary public, and return it to the Bureau of Public Debt. You may be asked to fill out supplemental forms if you cannot remember the original numbers of the stolen savings bonds. You may also be required to present valid identification and your social security card.

    • 3

Use the official website of the Treasury Department, TreasuryDirect.com, to handle the entire process of reporting the stolen savings bonds (see Resources below). You will be able to download the PD F 1048E form, as well as any supplemental forms. You will need to have the forms notarized before you mail them back to the Treasury Department.

    • 4

Wait for confirmation from the Treasury Department that the stolen bonds have been verified as belonging to you. New bonds will then be reissued and mailed directly to you.

    • 5

Consider using an online service, such as SavingsBonds.com, which will help you download the appropriate forms and walk you through the entire process for a relatively low fee (see Resources below). They will even have a savings bond consultant review your documentation to ensure that it will be approved by the Treasury Department.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's always an excellent idea to write down the numbers of all of your Treasury bonds and keep the list safe in a separate area. This could be in a safety deposit box at your bank or in a safe at a relative's house.

  • You will need Adobe's free Acrobat Reader program to download forms from TreasuryDirect (see Resources below). These forms come as PDF documents directly from the site and can be read on a Mac or PC computer.
