How to Become a Physical Design Engineer

A physical design engineer works with a team of engineers in layout and design contexts to develop new products, as well as help determine the direction for a design project. The physical design engineer can work as a contractor, or for a company to design technical projects for a variety of manufacturers and vendors. This job requires substantial schooling and experience, and it is an important component of technological advancements in today's society.

Instructions

    • 1

Focus your attention in high school to coursework in physics, math, science, English and some electrical design.

    • 2

Become proficient and comfortable with computers, particularly with UNIX.

    • 3

Look for a program that will prepare you for physical design engineering. This will require a Bachelor or Master of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

    • 4

Enroll in courses that cover the topics of system design, power analysis, compliance requirements, fabrication and manufacturing interface, flow methodology and detail design.

    • 5

Consider classes that help you develop good analytical, communication and small group skills to be able to work in diverse teams.

    • 6

Seek internship opportunities to gain the valuable work experience most employers are looking for. Your academic advisor will likely have information on internship opportunities.

    • 7

Join one or more professional engineering organizations to gain access to job and networking opportunities.

Tips & Warnings

  • Due to increasing diversification of work environments, mastery of a second language can make you more competitive in the job market.

  • Due to the stressful nature of the job, multi-tasking and maintaining a positive attitude will be the key to your success.

  • Although many employers require a Bachelor of Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, the more successful job candidates tend to have a Master's degree.

  • The job of physical design engineer requires very little travel, if any.

  • While the physical design engineer sets the direction for a project, she also must be able to take input from other engineers who are working on her team.

  • Not only is a design engineer responsible for directing a design team, but he also plays a major role in the prototyping of new products, software or structures.

  • Do not expect to land a high-paying job right out of school without some practical experience. Summer jobs and internships are an excellent option for students lacking crucial work experience.

  • Any technical field will likely be fast-paced and be constantly changing. Know how to adapt to change and to learn new things quickly to become a successful physical design engineer.
