How to Become an Architectural CAD Technician

An architectural CAD technician is an organized and self-disciplined person who uses computer technology to produce detailed drafts and 3-dimensional plans for architectural projects. CAD stands for "computer aided drafting," and it is essential in allowing technicians to create blueprints and layouts in very little time. The architectural CAD technician is generally a visually oriented problem solver who specializes in finding design solutions.

  1. Step 1

    Develop a strong background in high school to prepare for this career track. Courses in math, science and English are helpful.

    Get comfortable with computer technology. An essential component of the CAD technician job is computer drafting.

    Become proficient in AutoCAD and a variety of Architectural Desktop programs. Many schools offer 2-year degree programs that provide the adequate training.

  • Not all CAD technician jobs are permanent. Many companies offer full-time temporary work as well.
