An appliance sales representative or "sales rep" works for an appliance manufacturer or wholesaler, negotiating the sale of appliances to retailers, such as appliance and department stores. It is not an easy task to become an appliance sales rep, but it may be well worth the effort.

Things You'll Need:

  • Resume
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Previous sales experience
  • Thorough knowledge of different appliances
  1. Step 1

Get to know appliances. Know what they're useful for, what they're capable of and what makes one brand better or worse than another. The more you know about the products, the better you can sell them.

  2. Step 2

Be able to answer questions, ranging from the practical to the obscure, about the products you are selling. Many sales reps travel with laptop computers in order to research questions that potential clients might have about their products.

  3. Step 3

Research details about the qualifications you will need to become an appliance sales rep. Many employers will want at least a bachelor's degree. Most, if not all, will want sales experience.

  4. Step 4

Contact different appliance manufacturers and ask whether they are looking to fill any sales rep positions. Ask what qualifications they are looking for and how you might go about securing a position there. Be sure to send in your resume.

  5. Step 5

Search job listings at topusajobs.com to see what appliance sales rep positions are available in your area (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • An appliance sales rep meets and negotiates with all the appliance and department stores in a particular area. It is usually a very large area, often spanning 3 or 4 states. Since the appliance sales rep must visit many stores regularly, expect frequent travel to be an important part of the sales rep's job.
  • A laptop computer is an important tool for any sales rep. It can be used to research products for presentations and keep in touch with manufacturers and clients while on the road.
  • Explore your options. An appliance sales rep may work directly for a single manufacturer or for a number of different manufacturers.
  • An appliance sales rep will often need to work long hours preparing presentations for prospective clients or securing sales. That, combined with the frequent travel that is involved, may make this job less desirable for people with families.
