Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small saw
  • Sharp knife
  • Nylon or latex gloves
  • Plastic bag
  • Cloth
  1. Step 1

Learn how to field dress game. Once you understand the procedure, you will be able to select your necessary equipment more effectively. You can learn from a friend, a relative or though an online guide.

  2. Step 2

Select your knife. A boning or fish-fillet knife, 6 to 8 inches in length, with a flexible blade is ideal. Make sure it is sharp. The sharpness of a knife can make or break the experience, so ensure that the knife you pick is adequate.

  3. Step 3

Think about carrying a small saw with you to use to split the pelvis and sternum. You will want a small, sharp, sturdy saw. Many hunters don't do this, trying to get around those bones though other means, but a saw is the most precise way, ensuring that meat-ruining mistakes will not be made.

  4. Step 4

Pick up some nylon or latex gloves to wear while you field dress your game. You want gloves in your size and without powder. Latex gloves are sometimes powdered for comfort, but in this case, the powder could get into the meat and ruin it.

  5. Step 5

Carry a few zip bags for the heart and liver. You'll want these bags to be at least gallon sized. If they're clear, you'll want an opaque bag to put them into.

Tips & Warnings
  • Field dress the animal immediately after the kill. This is the only way to insure the purest and tastiest possible meat.
  • Make sure to remove the windpipe as soon as possible. The windpipe sours quickly and is one of the most common factors in the ruining of meat.
  • It's a good idea to keep sharpening tools handy, as trying to clean and dress a deer with dull equipment is an ugly, unfortunate job.
  • State and local governments control hunting laws and every state is different, so make sure to familiarize yourself with the post-kill rules of your state. In some states, for instance, you must present the kill to the proper authorities before you are legally allowed to remove its head.
