How to Plan a Trip to Phleger Estate, California

The Phleger Estate is located in San Mateo County and marks the most southern part of the Golden Gate Parks. Mary Phleger sold the estate of 1,232 acres to the Peninsula Open Space Trust in 1994, who later decided to turn it over to the National Park Service. The house and its outbuildings are still privately-owned. These steps will help you get the most out of your trip to this popular estate.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Walk some of the trails at Phleger Estate. As you walk on the trails, you may see some of the house's privately owned outbuildings along with a forest of redwoods, oaks, and firs. If you visit the trails through the Huddart County Park parking lot, tell the attendant you are visiting Phleger Estate and the entrance fee can be waived.
Step2
See beautiful and endangered wildlife at Milagra Ridge. The Mission blue and San Bruno butterflies and the red-legged frog are on the threatened or endangered species list. In order to preserve this delicate wildlife when you visit, you must stay on the provided trails and leash your pets.
Step3
Visit the former federal prison, Alcatraz on Alcatraz Island. You will need to book a ferry ride to the prison through a cruise company at least two months in advance. Some cruise companies offer themed, age appropriate guided tours for varied prices and times throughout the day and night. You will need to wear supportive shoes and layer your clothing in order to adapt to changing temperatures.
Step4
Enjoy yourself at the Crissy Field Center located in the Presidio in San Francisco. Order an organic or homegrown item from the "Crissy Cafe," buy a souvenir from the gift shop or get involved in a camp or interactive learning experience. There are also many wonderful trails to walk on.
