How to Become a State Trooper in Maryland

There are many careers that will tax you mentally and physically but few are as rewarding as serving the residents of Maryland as a State Trooper. The hours are long but the satisfaction of being one of "Maryland's Finest" can't be denied. Follow the steps below to become a Maryland State Trooper.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Valid drivers license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Applicant Orientation Certificate

Step1
Attend Applicant Orientation, which will be conducted by the recruitment division of the Maryland State Patrol. Call (410) 653-4337 to get locations and times for orientation.
Step2
Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and possess a valid drivers license. You must be a United States citizen and 20 years of age at time of application.
Step3
Take a fitness assessment that includes 1.5 mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, handgun trigger pull and flexibility test.
Step4
Take a written exam that is comprised of 100 multiple choice questions and pass an oral interview that is conducted by three members of the Maine State Trooper Department.
Step5
Undergo a background investigation and submit to a polygraph test. After these are completed you may start the final phases of the hiring process to become a Maryland State Trooper.
Step6
Be screened medically and mentally by an approved physician and psychiatrist and anticipate being offered a spot in the training academy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start getting your body in top shape before you even apply to be a Maryland State Trooper. You will be that much ahead of the game and not struggle with the physical tests if you begin before you actually are required to do so.
  • Do not apply to become a Maryland State Trooper if you cannot commit to a rigorous testing process and 25 weeks of training if you make it through the selection period.
