How to Become a State Trooper in Kansas

Kansas State Troopers are on the highways performing many duties. Not only do they investigate motor accidents and stop drivers who are not following the rules of the road, they also spend a great deal of time educating the citizens of Kansas on road safety. Follow the steps below to become a Kansas State Trooper.

Things You’ll Need:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid drivers license

Step1
Be a United States citizen in good physical and mental condition. Possess a valid drivers license and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Step2
Have corrected vision of 20/25 and pass a hearing test that is given by a state appointed clinician.
Step3
Pass a psychological exam and background checks, and undergo a polygraph test. All scores must attain a certain level to continue on with the hiring process.
Step4
Pass a fitness test that includes dummy takedown, obstacle course, weight drag and kneel and crawl.
Step5
Attend training for 22 weeks at the Academy in Salina, Kansas. After this time you will be offered a position that could be anywhere in the state of Kansas.

Tips & Warnings

  • After completing training and securing a position as a Kansas State Trooper, you will be assigned your own state vehicle. This is a great benefit of this position.
  • You will be automatically disqualified from applying to become a Kansas State Trooper if you have a dishonorable discharge from any armed services branch.
