How to Do Yogalates

Yogalates combines the practice of yoga with Pilates. Practitioners often use Hatha yoga exercises, but Tibetan, Taoist or other forms of yoga can also be incorporated. Yogalates is designed to strengthen both the mind and the body through the combination of poses and exercises. Although purists of both practices have made arguments against it, many love the blending of the two.

    • 1

Consult with your doctor to make sure you are physically able to participate in an exercise program. While beginners should always find out about any medical issues before starting, exercise veterans may want to have some baseline tests done. This way you can see how yogalates alone or in combination with other exercise changes your body.

    • 2

Study the basics of Yoga and Pilates. Knowing about both practices can help you decide if yogalates is something you'll enjoy or not and can help you know how to blend the two. Getting the basics down also helps you feel more comfortable in a group setting.

    • 3

Find a yogalates class in your gym or community center. Many places are now offering yogalates classes because they are so popular. The best way to see if you like the practice is to try it. Look for a class that's free or that allows you to pay for only a few sessions at first.

    • 4

Make sure your instructor has some yoga or Pilates certification. This means they have gone through training and are qualified to teach. Ideally, your instructor would be trained in both methods.

    • 5

Bring a towel or mat to class to protect your spine and another towel you can roll up for exercises if needed. Depending on where you're attending classes, you may need to bring other equipment like a band or yoga blocks. Check with your instructor or the location to see if you'll need anything; many places have everything you need already there.

    • 6

Talk to your instructor about any concerns or problems you might be having. Your instructor can help you modify any poses or exercises you have difficulty with and can correct your form if needed. Studies show that students who talk to their instructors get more out of there workouts so don't be afraid to approach her.
