Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Monitor a teen's lifestyle to understand what causes them to overeat. Many teens turn to food to cope with stress, loneliness or boredom. Identify the root cause and find ways to remedy it before discussing a diet program.
Step2
Consult a doctor or dietician to determine the right dieting plan for a teenager. The age and growth rate can play a major role in deciding an appropriate diet program that includes the right kind of nutrition for a developing teen.
Step3
Talk to a teen about eating healthier foods instead of simply giving up eating to lose weight. Educate them about eating more fruit and vegetables which not only controls the weight, but also sugar and cholesterol levels in the body.
Step4
Give the teen confidence to relax the diet once in a while when they are with their friends or at parties. Help them understand that deprivation only makes dieting more of a challenge. Encourage them to get back on track and balance out the splurge instead of feeling guilty or giving up the program.
Step5
Make changes around the house by adopting healthy cooking styles and engaging in fun family activities. Support and encouragement from family and friends are important to help a teen appreciate their efforts and realize their goals.
Step6
Engage the teen in a physical activity to burn calories. When you diet, your body assumes a disaster mode and tries to preserve fat by reducing metabolism. Physical exercise increases the metabolic rate helping one to stay energetic and active during dieting.
