Fencing is a popular sport which provides enthusiasts with an athletic and romantic pastime. Eventually, a fencer will need to buy a new fencing sword, either because their sword has broken or they need a different sword than what they've been using.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read fencing equipment reviews. These can be found online and a few links have been included in the "Resources" section of this article below.

  2. Step 2

Find a fencing supply retailer. Many of these are available online and through mail order companies, but you cannot get a good feel for the sword by using these methods.

  3. Step 3

Check the way the sword blade bends. It should bend smoothly, across the length of the blade.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the blade for poor quality construction. Carbon deposits on the blade, a rough blade surface and loose handle construction are all signs of a poor quality fencing sword.

Tips & Warnings
  • When choosing a fencing sword there are several factors to check before deciding on a blade. Check weight, balance, blade stiffness and construction to find one that best suits you.
  • Buying from a quality fencing supplier is the best way to ensure you get a quality product. Buying from the Internet or from mail order companies can be risky and doesn't give you an opportunity to get a feel for the blade's qualities.
  • Check the return policy of the retailer before buying from them. If your blade breaks due to poor construction, a quality fencing supplier should stand behind their product and offer a refund or exchange.
