When preparing for plastic surgery there are certain qualifications you should seek in the doctor perfoming the surgery. Plastic surgery can cover many different areas of the body and not every surgeon is the right doctor for the job. Learn how to choose a plastic surgeon by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what kind of plastic surgery procedure you want. The best surgeons normally specialize in a particular surgery rather than a number of different surgeries.

  2. Step 2

Find a specialist in the type of surgery you want. Even if you must travel out of town to find a better surgeon, it is worth your health and body to make arrangements.

  3. Step 3

Ask the surgeon questions about their experience in performing the particular surgery you want. Ask how many operations they have performed and how many years they have been performing this surgery. A surgeon should not have a problem allowing you to contact former clients with similar surgeries to yours.

  4. Step 4

Make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There is no such certification as a board certified cosmetic surgeon. If a surgeon tells you otherwise, leave.

  5. Step 5

Find out the cost of the surgery, but compare this price with prices of other doctors. If the price is well below what other doctors charge, be cautious. Surgeries performed for very low prices may end up costing you more in the long run from complications.

  6. Step 6

Know if the surgeon is allowed to perform surgeries at any local hospital. If your preferred hospital won't allow your surgeon to perform operations at their hospital, don't allow him or her to operate on you.
