Things You'll Need:

  • Ruler
  1. Step 1

Determine if your chair has holes around the perimeter of the seat. Measure the distance between the centers of each hole. Choose super fine cane (2mm) if your holes measure 3/8 inches apart. Chair cane ranges in size from 2 mm to 3.5 mm width. Purchase the cane width that your seat requires.

  2. Step 2

Look to see if a groove exists around the perimeter of the chairs' seat. Purchase pre-woven cane webbing in a size that matches existing cane webbing on your chair. Measure the distance from the center of one hole, in the existing cane webbing, to the center of the next hole to determine size. Choose any size cane if you plan to replace all existing webbing on your chair.

  3. Step 3

Investigate different materials used for seat weaving. Chairs with rails around the seat are suitable for patterns using reed, ash, sea grass or fiber rush materials.

  4. Step 4

Consider different patterns when choosing pre made cane or designing your own seat. Look for herringbone, radio weave, star weave or twill patterns.
