Contemporary bedroom design is about simplicity. This design style is anchored around clean lines and few accessories. Use a contemporary bedroom design when you want a simple, streamlined retreat at the end of a busy day.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solid-colored bedding or duvet
  • Paint
  • Solid-colored curtains
  1. Step 1

Paint the walls a neutral color. This isn't a hard and fast rule, though. If you don't like neutrals, a bold color is fine, just as long as all the walls are one color.

  2. Step 2

Choose solid colored bedding for the most streamlined look. Your bedding must be void of prints or patterns in order to maintain the simplicity of the contemporary design.

  3. Step 3

Use only a few wall hangings. Choose just a couple of your favorite pieces to hang on the walls.

  4. Step 4

Keep the furniture simple. Choose furniture that does not have embellishments or adornments such as intricate trim work or moldings.

  5. Step 5

Nix the knick-knacks. The idea of contemporary design is for the room to be clean and simple. A variety of knick-knacks on every flat surface creates a cluttered look.

  6. Step 6

Hang solid-colored curtains. Choose a color that complements both the bedding and the walls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get paint chips. Before you begin buying things, go to a home improvement store and pick up a few paint chips with complementary color schemes.
  • Buy a duvet. You don't have to buy a brand new comforter for your bed. Instead, buy a less expensive duvet to cover your existing comforter.
  • Opt for black-and-white photos; they compliment any decorating style.
  • Keep picture frames simple. Fancy picture frames will throw off the clean and simple lines you are trying to create.
  • Limit your color combinations. Using too much color, even if they are solid colors, creates "visual noise."
  • If you must use prints, stick with simple patterns. For example, it is fine to use a neutral-colored Jacquard print as long as the print is one color and not different or contrasting colors.
