Even though the word "winter" evokes images of gray skies and a harmless, hibernating sun, in truth the wintertime sun is just as dangerous as it is in summer. The glare of sunlight off of snow or rainwater can even intensify the sun's light, making winter a time for increased vigilance against the sun. Follow these steps to learn how to buy protection for your skin during the winter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy sunscreen. While you might associate sunscreen with a sunny beach, it should actually be applied year round, as long as you're outdoors. Use a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF rating of at least 15 in order to adequately protect yourself.

  2. Step 2

Buy a hat. Buying a winter hat with a long brim and even some neck coverage will go a long way in keeping you warm and protected from potentially harmful UV rays. Look at sporting goods stores and winter clothing outlets for a good head covering.

  3. Step 3

Buy UV protected clothing. Outdoor clothing outlets such as REI offer specially treated, UV protecting clothing. These shirts and pants offer protection for your arms, legs and torso that is equivalent to various levels of sunscreen. Even though these threads offer protection, you should still apply sunscreen underneath the clothes if you plan on being outdoors for long periods of time.

  4. Step 4

Buy lighter-tint sunglasses. Even though it might not be bright outside, your eyes still need protection from sunlight. If your summer sunglasses are too dark to see properly in winter light levels, buy a pair of shades that filter UV light without disturbing your vision.
