Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that affects thousands of Americans. The syndrome's name might be new, but you quite possibly have already been affected by the condition. Those with RLS complain of a vague, hard to describe irritated feeling in their legs. The level of pain varies from mild annoyance to severe discomfort. Here are a few tips for taming those restless legs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cut the caffeine. Almost all RLS studies point to caffeine as a culprit.

  2. Step 2

Avoid cigarettes and cocktails. Yes, unfortunately, these vices should be eliminated in order to treat Restless Leg Syndrome. Cut back significantly if you can't quit altogether.

  3. Step 3

Indulge in a hot bath. Coerce someone to bathe with you and massage your legs. The combination of heat and massage is very good for restless legs. Use a heating pad or an ice pack (depending on what works for you) if you don't have time for the bath.

  4. Step 4

Get to bed. Medical studies have shown that irritation from Restless Leg Syndrome is greatly reduced by getting adequate sleep. Relaxing routines before bed and a regular schedule are also highly recommended.

  5. Step 5

Settle down before you sleep. Exercise, sex or vigorous cleaning an hour before you head to bed increases the symptoms of RLS.

  6. Step 6

Consider natural remedies. There are a number of pills, lotions and balms that can be purchased for the treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome. Do an Internet search, ask your physician or visit a natural remedy store for more information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit your doctor if your RLS symptoms are worsening. He may recommend vitamin and mineral supplements to increase your intake of magnesium or iron.
  • Change your daily routine for minor improvements. For example, sit in chairs that give you more leg room. Adjust the height of your desk chair so you are positioned higher off the ground. Do small intermittent leg exercises throughout the day (but not before bed).
  • There is currently no cure for Restless Leg Syndrome, but there are physical therapies and prescribed medications becoming more readily available.
