Digital cameras are definitely high on list of technically savvy, and not so savvy, consumers. With slight differences in shutter speed, action pictures with a digital camera require some tweaking and a little technique. Take action pictures like a pro, or at least like a semi-pro, with a few hints and a little practice.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Use the continuous mode to take action shots. Start taking pictures just before the shot that you are wanting and continue to snap until the action is complete.
Step2
Use a tri-pod to hold the camera steady when taking pictures with the sports mode.
Step3
Put your finger on the shutter button, and press it until it is just ready take the shot. Focus the camera on the subject.
Step4
Push the shutter button to take the picture just a few seconds before your desired shot takes place. Digital cameras take a few seconds to take the picture after the shutter is released resulting in missed shots if you snap the picture right when the action is taking place.
Step5
Use the auto mode on the camera if the action mode results in blurry photos. Snap the shots in the same way, releasing the shutter just a moment before the desired shot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have your kids kick a ball around the yard. Practice taking pictures of them kicking until you get the timing down.
  • Make sure the camera has a continuous mode when you purchase it. Continuous mode will get the best results for action shots.
  • Use a fill flash when taking action shots in partially to fully shaded areas.
  • Action shots may come out blurry without a tripod.
