Hardwood is a durable, low maintenance choice for flooring, but even the highest quality wood floors can end up with scratches, dents and dull finishes. Daily wear and tear is inevitable, but you can prolong the new look of your floors by taking a few simple preventative steps. Here's how to protect a wood floor.

From Quick Guide: Refinish Your Hardwood Floors
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use cleaning products that are specifically made for hardwood floors. Many floor cleaners contain chemicals that can harm the surface or dull it over time.

  2. Step 2

Sweep or dust-mop floors weekly. Dirt, sand and grime can scratch the finish of the wood. Avoid vacuuming, as it can scrape the floor.

  3. Step 3

Place doormats outside each exterior door and encourage guests to wipe their feet before entering.

  4. Step 4

Place rugs in high traffic areas as well as in front of sinks.

  5. Step 5

Use protector pads under furniture, particularly table and chair legs.

  6. Step 6

Buff the floors periodically if they have a wax finish.

  7. Step 7

Maintain the humidity level in your home at a fixed level of between 40 and 50 percent. Wood can shrink or warp when exposed to extreme humidity levels.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't pour water onto the floor. It may seep between the boards or into scratches, causing swelling.
  • Avoid wearing cleats, high heels or sports shoes on wood floors.
