Step 1
Determine where you would like to travel with your kids. You can talk to friends or family members about vacations they have taken with their children. There are also many books that discuss family friendly vacation destinations.
-
Step 2
Select accommodations and flight arrangements (if necessary) for your trip with your children. For accommodations, make sure that the hotel you select is family friendly with family amenities, such as cribs, babysitting, pools, suites with kitchens and kid friendly meals. Some families like to stay in vacation homes instead of hotels.
-
Step 3
Plan an itinerary for your trip and try not to pack too much into any one day. Kids, especially young ones can overtire or become cranky when they are forced to do too much. Try to keep some resemblance to your schedule at home to make it easier on your children as well.
-
Step 4
Have all necessary documentation for your children. If you are flying, bring your children's birth certificates for proof of identification. Some airlines may not ask for this information, but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you are traveling internationally, obtain passports for your children as well.
-
Step 5
Prepare your children for your trip. You can talk to them about where you are going and about what you are doing. You can also read to them or show them books about your destination and aspects of traveling, such as flying on a plane. Also, talk to them about where you will be staying and about how you will be getting to your destination.
-
Step 6
Pack enough clothing for the trip, as well as any necessary toiletries and medications. Include items that can help pass the time during travel, such as books, playing cards, small toys or magazines. Be sure to bring a camera and your child's favorite stuffed animal on the trip as well. If you are traveling with a baby or a toddler, have a well-stocked diaper bag for the trip.
-
Step 7
Visit the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website if you are flying with your children. This website gives you information on what you can carry on, as well as information on traveling with liquids, such as breast milk or baby formula.
