How to Make a Heating Pad
Aches and pains can slow down even the most active people. Pain relievers aren't always the most effective way of treating sore joints and muscles. Using a heating pad can provide relief without resorting to medication. A reusable grain- or rice-filled heating pad is convenient, affordable and easy to make.

1
Cut out two 4-by-12 inch pieces of fabric. Use a ruler or straight edge to guide your cutting so the edges are straight and the pieces match.
-
2
Sandwich the fabric with the pattern or outside facing inward. Line up the edges perfectly and pin into place.
-
-
3
Sew both long sides and one short side completely by hand or with a sewing machine. Place the stitches close enough together so the rice can't leak out. Turn the bag inside out so the pattern is on the outside.
-
4
Fill the bag with 1 ½ cups of rice, or as much as is needed to fill up the bag. Rice should be able to move around.
-
5
Pinch the open pieces of the bag together and fold over ¼ inch. Iron the edge and repeat. Once the fabric has cooled, stitch the hem.
-
6
Microwave heating pad for 1 minute before using. Let cool slightly and place on affected area.
