How to Leg Yield
The leg yield is one of the easiest lateral exercises for a horse to do. While walking forward, the horse moves to the side by crossing his legs and keeping his body straight. The leg yield lays the ground work for more complicated movements.

1
Mount your horse and start trotting. Ride him long and low for a while to allow him to relax.
-
2
Make sure your horse has a good, straight forward walk. The leg yield will improve the horse's balance and help him understand your commands.

3
Shift to the outside seat bone, while sitting straight, like you're getting ready to stand in the stirrups. This will allow you to let the inside of your leg rest against the horse's side, behind the girth, and the pressure will make your horse make a step over movement.
-
4
Use your outside rein to control the bend and allow your horse to take a couple of leg yield steps then make him walk straight again. Repeat this step until he learns the signal.
-
5
Praise your horse when he does well. Many young horses may be intimidated by the leg yield at first, so be patient.
