Things You'll Need:
- Second phone line account
- Telephone wire and faceplate
- Wire stripper
- Drill or screwdriver
-
Step 1
Locate any telephone jacks and wall plates throughout the home. Most will be a flush-mounted faceplate with one opening for a telephone jack plug. Other connections might look like a small box on the wall with the same connector.
-
Step 2
Contact the local telephone company to establish a second telephone line account. This will result in a service that allows two lines of communication on the telephone service to the home.
-
Step 3
Purchase enough PBX or telephone wire to meet the project's needs. Have the local hardware or home improvement store employee assist in finding the correct materials.
-
Step 4
Run the wire from the main telephone junction box to the desired location. Often the telephone jack will already be wired to the single line. In such a case, follow the existing line for best results.
-
Step 5
Strip the newly installed wire insulation off to expose the four wires inside. The wires will be red, green, yellow and black. Newer homes may include additional multi-colored wires for other connections. Strip the four colored wires the expose the copper ends.
-
Step 6
Attach the newly stripped wires to the telephone jack's four color-coded screws. Twist the wires securely around each screw one turn. Tighten the screw into place.
-
Step 7
Reattach the second telephone line's faceplate and test the connection.
