There are several reasons to add a second phone line. Whether installing a new fax machine or computer, a second phone line eases the traffic for devices that need a dedicated line. Although some contact their local telephone company to have an additional telephone line installed, the task can easily be undertaken without outside help.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Second phone line account
  • Telephone wire and faceplate
  • Wire stripper
  • Drill or screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Locate any telephone jacks and wall plates throughout the home. Most will be a flush-mounted faceplate with one opening for a telephone jack plug. Other connections might look like a small box on the wall with the same connector.

  2. Step 2

Contact the local telephone company to establish a second telephone line account. This will result in a service that allows two lines of communication on the telephone service to the home.

  3. Step 3

Purchase enough PBX or telephone wire to meet the project's needs. Have the local hardware or home improvement store employee assist in finding the correct materials.

  4. Step 4

Run the wire from the main telephone junction box to the desired location. Often the telephone jack will already be wired to the single line. In such a case, follow the existing line for best results.

  5. Step 5

Strip the newly installed wire insulation off to expose the four wires inside. The wires will be red, green, yellow and black. Newer homes may include additional multi-colored wires for other connections. Strip the four colored wires the expose the copper ends.

  6. Step 6

Attach the newly stripped wires to the telephone jack's four color-coded screws. Twist the wires securely around each screw one turn. Tighten the screw into place.

  7. Step 7

Reattach the second telephone line's faceplate and test the connection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow the existing home wiring scheme when running new wire. This will greatly assist in a successful install.
  • Telephone wiring does carry a very small electrical charge. Handle all connections carefully.
