Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Instant messaging software
  1. Step 1

Choose an instant messaging program. There are many free programs available for download. AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft Messenger and ICQ are popular free IM programs. A downloadable IM will install quickly and easily. Read the tutorial or help guide to learn about the program.

  2. Step 2

Pick a screen name. The program you choose will lead you through the steps to sign up and create a screen name. People will use this name to IM you, so choose something that is easy to remember but unique to your personality. If you would like to stay anonymous on the web, do not use your real name as your screen name.

  3. Step 3

Tell your friends about your new screen name and add them to your IM friends list. Add other contact information for your friends including phone number, address and birthday.

  4. Step 4

Make the appearance of your IM unique to you. Choose a personal avatar or photo that people will see when they instant message you. You can also change your fonts and colors.

  5. Step 5

Select the appropriate security features. The IM program will most likely have a place where you can protect your privacy by selecting who is allowed to IM you. Some programs let you choose when and how others see if you are online.

  6. Step 6

Start instant messaging. Follow your IM program's instructions to click on a friend's name and send a message.

Tips & Warnings
  • See if your IM program allows you to communicate through video or audio. Additional equipment like a web cam and microphone will be needed.
  • Emoticons are little images that people often insert into an instant message, such as a smiley face. Most IM programs have a button that gives you a selection of emoticons.
  • When choosing a screen name, ensure it is appropriate for your IM usage. For example, if you will use instant messenger for business, don't pick a screen name that is silly or unprofessional.
  • Never go alone to meet someone in person who you have met online.
  • Do not give out any personal information such as credit card number, phone number or address.
