How to Hunt Pheasants

Pheasant seasons differ by states, so hunters should check with the state's natural resource agency to find out the game bird seasons and to obtain a license. Pheasant hunters are often active in habitat restoration and protection efforts and are stewards of the land as well. As the most sought after game bird, pheasants are hunted across America.

1. Start planning a pheasant hunt by learning the state's regulations. State natural resource agencies go by different names, so be certain to contact the state agency responsible for resources and not just for the environment. Pheasant populations vary from year-to-year and the natural resource agencies have a wealth of information in addition to hunting licenses.

2. Obtain a gun permit. Gun ownership and purchasing rules vary by state. You must have the proper license before you can buy a gun. Hunters must obey the laws concerning the transportation of firearms. Gun ownership has many duties and obligations, and security, maintenance and storage are just a few of the considerations.

3. Try several different guns to get a feel for the proper one. Fellow hunters will have recommendations, and the sales staff at the local gun shop or sports store will let prospective buyers get a feel for the weight and proportions. Go to local shooting ranges too for some true expert advice.

4. Bring along a trained bird dog. Dogs are critical to flushing out pheasants. A good dog must be trained from an early age. Ask a friend and fellow hunter to recommend a good breeder. A great hunting dog is a rare find, but the odds are improved by training the dog properly. As the hunter and dog work closely together, the training process builds a bond between them.

5. Find the best pheasant hunting spots by asking fellow hunters. State natural resource agency specialists have numerous publications on pheasant hunting and are responsible for creating much of the pheasant habitat across a state. There are also several national organizations devoted to game birds, pheasants and hunting. Contact any one of these to increase chances for a successful pheasant hunt.

6. Buy the proper attire. Expect cold weather and dampness when hunting pheasants. Hunters should always wear bright colored hunting vests. Many hunters wear vision and hearing protection also. A sturdy, comfortable pair of boots, and good, thick socks will often save the day.
