There's no shortage of Christmas movies that have been made in Hollywood over the last 50 years. Our gift to you--a quick guide to beginning your collection of Christmases on film.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Start with the classics. The easiest way to begin your Christmas movie collection is to obtain the most popular, most watched movies of all time. These are easy to find and usually inexpensive. Here are some must haves: "It's a Wonderful Life," "Miracle on 34th Street," "Home Alone," "A Christmas Story" and "A Christmas Carol."
Step2
Consider including a variety of film genres in your collection. A well-rounded collection might include alternative Christmas movies, such as "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Barney's Night Before Christmas," "The Gift," and "A Very Brady Christmas." This is optional, but there are hundreds of Christmas-themed movies in areas such as horror, anime and children's.
Step3
Purchase movies for your collection right after Christmas. Everything related to the holidays is marked down significantly once Christmas is over. No one wants to buy gifts or watch Christmas-themed movies in January.
Step4
Put Christmas movies on your gift list. Expanding your collection will be less costly if you ask friends and family to purchase films for you as gifts on your birthday and Christmas.
Step5
Visit film-related websites to get Christmas movie lists. This will help you remember DVDs that you are forgetting about. The Internet Movie Database or Rotten Tomatoes are both informational movie websites.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your collection will be more unique and diverse if you collect some Christmas movies on VHS tapes. You probably won't be able to watch them years from now, but no collection is complete without some vintage items.
  • Buy in bulk. Holiday films are often sold in "collection" packages or in groups of three. This will save you money and expand your collection more quickly.
  • Keep an updated inventory of your Christmas movie collection. DVDs get lost, borrowed and stolen. If you are serious about your collection, keep track of what you own and where it is.
