How to Argue Effectively

Anyone can learn how to argue effectively. All it takes is some self-discipline and a calm and logical approach to conflict. Learning how to argue effectively will greatly increase your chances of getting what you want, when you want and how you want it.

Instructions

1. Ask yourself what you want to accomplish. The first step in arguing effectively is deciding what you want to gain from the argument, whether it's getting a raise, getting out of a traffic ticket or even talking your husband into doing the dishes. Frame your argument to support your goal.

2. Gather your evidence. Find the facts that support your argument, as well as those that hurt it. Stress the good facts and explain why the bad don't apply. The more you rely on objective criteria to support your position, the more persuasive you will be.

3. Prepare a checklist. A checklist can help keep you prioritize your objectives and help to keep topics on course during the argument. Briefly outlining the issues you want to address and the points you want to make can also help you argue effectively.

4. Make your case. State what you want, why you deserve it and the evidence that supports your position. Be clear and precise and don't let emotion cloud your thinking. Refer to your checklist and outline to make sure you stick to the point and don't get distracted or carried away.

5. Listen to the other side's response and address the issues raised. Explain simply and logically why your position should prevail.

• Be willing to compromise. Arguing effectively isn't so much about winning but about achieving a resolution that is mutually acceptable to both parties.

• If things get heated, don't be afraid to walk away. Nothing causes an argument to deteriorate quicker than insults, blaming or raised voices.
