Things You'll Need:

  • Laptop
  • Carrying case (optional)
  1. Step 1

Bring your fully-charged laptop onto the plane in an approved carry-on travel case. When proceeding through airport security, it is likely you will have to remove your laptop for examination via an electronic detection system. Be sure your laptop is readily accessible while on the flight, as you may be unable to move around to retrieve it.

  2. Step 2

Follow crew directions regarding the use of electronic devices. You are prohibited to use your laptop during take-off and landing procedures, so you will likely have to wait to power up your laptop once the airplane has reached its cruising altitude.

  3. Step 3

Ensure your laptop options for wireless radio enabling are disabled. You will be unable to use a wireless network card while in flight. You are prohibited from using any type of radio, other than those approved for personal music such as an MP3 player.

  4. Step 4

Place your laptop on your folding tray, which you extend into the secured position from the seat in front of you. If you are traveling in first class, you may access a side tray instead.

  5. Step 5

Request access to an electrical outlet if you are sitting in a service class that can make such accommodations. Typically, business or first class accommodations include access to an electrical outlet. However, it is rare to find an outlet options in coach class.

  6. Step 6

Keep your laptop and related accessories contained to one area to be mindful of other passengers and the cabin crew.
