It's easy to purchase ringtones for your cell phone, but you can also create your own ringtone with your Apple Macintosh computer. Just choose your favorite song, software for music downloads and a Mac-compatible cell phone. Follow these steps to create your personalized ringtone.

From Quick Guide: Cell Phone Ringtones
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the song you want to use as a ringtone. Look for your song on your CD or open your computer's music library. Open your music downloading program, such as iTunes. Right-click on your song choice after you open your library. If you are using a CD, place it into your computer.

  2. Step 2

Find the CD in your source list in iTunes. Go to the program's menu and select Preferences. This will take you to the Advanced tab, where you will select Importing. At the Importing tab, make sure it reads "Import Using: MP3 Encoder."

  3. Step 3

Read the list of songs from the disc menu. Check off the song from the list that you want to import from your CD. Un-check the songs that you don't want, then select Import CD located in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

  4. Step 4

After finding the song, right-click on the title and select "Copy." Paste the file onto your computer's desktop, or click-and-drag it to the desktop. The song will save as an MP3 file.

  5. Step 5

Open an audio-editing site, such as Audacity. This program can be downloaded onto your computer for free. Open the program after downloading it, then go to the File menu to select "Open." Select the MP3 that you previously saved on your desktop.

  6. Step 6

Look at the next window, which will feature blue squiggly lines to indicate sound quality and frequency. Click on 10 to 15 seconds of the song that you're using as a ringtone. Preview the sound by hitting the space bar, then download a file encoding program such as the free LAME Codec Library. Pick the file from the LAME Codec webpage, and unzip it by double-clicking.

  7. Step 7

Find and rename your music file, then return to Audacity to choose the Export Selection as MP3 feature from the File menu. A box will appear that reads, "Audacity does not support MP3 files directly," so hit "Yes" to locate the file. Search for your renamed file and open it. Another box will appear to let you know that the file is exporting. You have now completed your own ringtone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending on your cell phone's features, you can send your custom ringtone as a music file through email or multimedia messaging.
