There are times when a new shower head needs to be installed in place of an existing unit. Several models feature massage or rain settings that contribute to a pleasurable showering experience. Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New shower head unit
  • Channel pliers
  • Plumber's tape
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of shower head will be installed. Models include spa type showers and eco-friendly, water-limiting nozzles.

  2. Step 2

Turn off any water to the existing shower head. This can be done at the faucet or at the main water shut-off valve, typically located in the wall behind the shower itself.

  3. Step 3

Remove the old shower head. Using a pair of channel pliers, rotate the existing shower head connections counter-clockwise until the unit is free from the water connector.

  4. Step 4

Clean any existing debris or material from the threaded water pipe. This will ensure a tight and secure connection for the new shower head.

  5. Step 5

Wrap any commercial plumber's tape around the threaded fitting for a watertight seal. Teflon Tape® is a good choice for this task.

  6. Step 6

Attach the new shower head by rotating the fitting onto the threaded pipe and turn clockwise until the unit is firmly secured. Connect any hoses or nozzles according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  7. Step 7

Turn on the water supply to the shower and test all of the unit's features.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a towel or two handy when removing the existing shower head as trapped water may leak.
  • Consider eco-friendly, low-flow shower heads to prevent wasting water.
  • Wear eye protection when removing the existing shower head.
