How to Find Scallop Shells

When most people think about sea shells, they think immediately of the sweet scallop shell with its corrugated ridges and tiny triangle feet that resemble a bow tie. Scallop shells can be found all over North America and beyond; there are even scallop shells in Antarctica. Finding one of these delicate beauties intact is a treat for any avid shell collector and is worth the extra effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Know what you're looking for. The small scallop shells are bay scallops, while larger scallops are sea scallops. If you're hunting for bay scallops, be prepared to look hard for these tiny wonders.

    • 2

Look for bay scallops during autumn when they're at their peak. You'll want to check out beaches that are on a bay side. These typically have smaller waves and often marshland to explore.

    • 3

Search for sea scallops on the outer coast line from mid-autumn through the middle of spring. Be aware that ocean-side beaches tend to have bigger surf and have no protection from the open water.

    • 4

Wait for low tide when it's easier to spot the ridges embedded in the sand. Walk along the sandbars and search in the small gullies.

    • 5

Realize that scallop shells that are still attached or that from the surface appear covered in seaweed and other unappealing gunk are alive. The scallop uses slime and seaweed as camouflage. If you don't want to take home a squatter, look for shiny, bright shells.

    • 6

Clean your shells when you get home. Put the shells in a solution of bleach to kill any leftover smell and help make them brighter. Afterward, use your treasures in craft projects, such as serving dishes or soap holders, or just put them on display.
