The fact that goat meat is more popular today is evident by the growing number of goats raised on farms and ranches. It is one of the first animals domesticated by man and is a main source of meat in some parts of the world. Learn how to cook goat meat using these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Choose goat because it is high in protein and low in fat. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it has a lower fat content when roasted than beef, chicken and pork.
Step2
Pick the cut of meat you want to cook. The most tender cuts of meat are the legs, ribs, shoulder, loin and breast. The less tender parts are stew meat, riblets and shanks.
Step3
Decide what method of cooking you will use. Tender cuts of meat are better if they are roasted, broiled or fried. The tougher cuts of meat become more tender if they are braised or stewed.
Step4
Find a recipe. Many cookbooks do not offer a variety of goat meat recipes. There are sources online with recipes from which you can choose.
Step5
Consider safety. Cook ground goat meat until it reaches a temperature of 160 degrees F. Make sure the juices run clear and are not pink or cloudy. For roasts and steaks, 145 degrees F is rare; 160 degrees F is medium; and 170 degrees F is well done.

Tips & Warnings

  • When cooking goat meat, use a meat thermometer to check the temperature.
  • Most goat meat is best when cooked slow with added moisture.
