Preparing the surface of exterior walls for painting is sometimes necessary when old or dangerous lead paint has to be removed. The techniques needed for surface preparation vary from project to project, yet can be undertaken and accomplished easily with a little skill.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine what kind of surface material is going to be worked on. Older homes may have a layer of dangerous lead paint hiding under coats of newer paint. Consult a local professional if lead paint is suspected. This removal requires special attention.

  2. Step 2

Remove any dust, debris and other foreign material from the surface. Years of accumulated weathering and outdoor contaminants can cause paint to bubble, flake or peel.

  3. Step 3

Power wash the exterior surfaces with a high-power sprayer to remove any loose material.

  4. Step 4

Scrub the exterior surface with a wire brush and a commercial cleaning detergent or water and bleach solution.

  5. Step 5

Caulk or prime any areas needed. Scrape away any debris or old caulk before applying new materials. Take care around windows and doors to maintain a good seal against the elements.

  6. Step 6

Scrape and sand the exterior surface until a smooth, clean result is achieved. Prime any bare wood areas after sanding to protect the surface. Remove any rotted wood or flaking paint. Use wood filler to fill any holes or gaps in the surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Power-wash the surface from the bottom to the top. This ensures all materials will wash away once reaching the top.
  • Use a power sander to make the project move along faster.
  • Use eye protection and gloves when working with power tools.
  • Wear a respirator or suitable breathing mask when working with commercial chemical cleaners.
