People are interested in going green for a wide variety of reasons. Some consider the environment and the impact we are having on our planet. Some think closer to home, of children and pets who can be harmed by the toxic cleaners we often keep in our supply closets. Whatever the reason, stocking your supply closet with green cleaning products can be simple and inexpensive.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Cleaning the House

Step1
Combine two parts vinegar with one part of both ammonia and water to create a green, streak-free window cleaning product.
Step2
Unclog your sink by pouring 1/4 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 1/2 cup vinegar. Close the drain tightly until the fizzing stops and then rinse with boiling water.
Step3
Add lemon juice or vinegar to salt to make a cleaning product that will fight mold and mildew.
Step4
Clean the oven with an environmentally-friendly paste made from baking soda, salt and hot water.
Step5
Polish your furniture with an environmentally-friendly mix of 1 tsp of olive oil plus 1/2 cup of vinegar.

Doing the Wash

Step1
Shop carefully. Look for laundry detergents and other products that are labeled "chlorine-free" and "no NPEs."
Step2
Soak stained clothes in water mixed with borax, washing soda or vinegar.
Step3
Head outside. Sunshine and fresh air are free, environmentally friendly and get your clean clothes dry and sweet smelling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always buy the largest-sized product available and look for cleaning products in cardboard boxes, not plastic containers. This will help you cut down on the amount of plastics clogging your local landfill.
  • Avoid buying any cleaning product that has the words: "toxic," "flammable," "vapors harmful" or "may cause burns on contact" on the label.
