How to Build a Duck Blind

Often when on a hunting trip, having a place or area to hide away from the wildlife is ideal. Duck blinds have been used for centuries as a concealed shoot-box. Building an effective duck blind doesn't have to cost hundreds of dollars and take months to assemble. With a little skill and patience, this project can be put together in a weekend.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the area where the duck blind is to be built is the best location for the arriving flocks of ducks. Having a clear shot near open water or across an open field is ideal.

    • 2

Purchase six wooded fence posts. Any post will suffice, yet pressure treated posts endure the outdoor elements better.

    • 3

Drive three of the posts into the ground 4 feet apart in a straight line. Do the same with the remaining three posts in a parallel line opposing the first three posts, making a six post rectangle 4 feet by 8 feet.

    • 4

Cut off the fence posts using a chainsaw to a height of 4 feet.

    • 5

Wrap hog wire around the outside of the posts to encase the blind. Tack the wire to the posts with nails. Leave one end open for entry and exit. This will add stability to the blind and hold the actual blind material.

    • 6

Place small saplings or other woody material around the blind and lean them against the hog wire. Interweave the material with the wire for strength against wind or rain. Create areas overhead of open and interwoven materials for shooting stations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase an 8 foot by 10 foot piece of plywood, cut in half and lay down as a simple floor for stools or chairs.

  • Put a few extra nails on the inside portion of the fence posts to hold bags or shot.

  • Wear hunter orange when hunting to prevent accidents.

  • Wear eye protection when using power tools.
