How to Buy a Deer Stand

Buying a deer stand can be a frustrating task. With all of the models and complex units available to hunters, it is easy to become confused. Keeping a good eye on deer throughout the hunting season is of utmost importance to any hunter and with a little knowledge can be achieved very simply.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the area that is being hunted. If there are good open areas looking out onto fields or streams, this would be an ideal area to put up the deer stand. In a very dense or thickly overgrown area, a tree deer stand might work better than a tower stand.

  2. Step 2

Ask the salesperson at the local sporting goods or hunter's supply store what he recommends for the season. Each season brings with it inherent differences from the season before and a seasoned hunter can best advise for the correct equipment.

  3. Step 3

Consider what equipment will be taken during the season and what the specific hunter's physical abilities are. Tree deer stands may offer a better option for trail deer and deep woods game, yet a tower stand can be more easily accessed.

  4. Step 4

Find a tower stand that has a removable ladder to keep out other hunters during the season.

  5. Step 5

Buy a larger tower model for an extra hunter or to include the children. Many models offer window flaps on all sides for better viewing and sturdier floors for chairs or benches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always buy a little more than what is needed for the season. This ensures a hassle-free hunting experience.
  • Think about building the unit instead of buying one. The costs are much cheaper and can be finished to hunter's specifications.
  • Share the cost of a deer tree stand with other hunters that might be hunting in the same area. Alternate weekends or days so that each hunter has equal time in the stand.
  • Make certain the unit is strong enough to hold the weight of the hunter and all equipment and supplies brought into it.
