How to Attract Ducks to a Pond

Whether you're a duck hunter, a dedicated bird watcher or just a lover of nature, a pond is a great way to attract ducks. Ducks add a natural element to any park or open area and require little or no care. Follow these steps to attract ducks to your pond to spruce things up a bit.

Instructions

    • 1

Make shallow edges. Ducks like to enter ponds that have shallow edges. Also, shallow edges encourage the growth of other wildlife that serve as food for the ducks. Be sure that the edges of your pond are shallow enough for a duck to casually wade into the water.

    • 2

Build nesting structures. Placing nesting structures near the pond is an excellent way to attract ducks. Wooden duck nests placed in the woodlands near the pond will almost certainly bring ducks to the pond to nest. If you want to attract different kind of ducks, add different nesting structures such as tripods and other waterfowl nests.

    • 3

Eliminate duck predators. Ducks will go where it is safe for them, so make sure that there are no duck predators in the area in order to attract the ducks to the pond. Look out for cats, snakes and alligators, and call animal control to get rid of these animals so the ducks can move in.

    • 4

Plant food or place feeders near the pond. You can place barley in or around the pond in order to attract ducks. Baiting in this way is a sure-fire way to get ducks into your pond.

    • 5

Put logs, sandbars, and rocks in the pond. Ducks use the pond for shelter and safety so placing logs in the middle of the pond will attract ducks that enjoy using the objects as a safe haven where they can sit and groom themselves.
