As the political world becomes more complicated and political stakes continue to rise, the role of the political scientist is becoming more relevant to daily life. While being a political scientist once meant writing academic papers and advising governments, today's political scientists publish popular books, appear on the nightly news and play a crucial role in policy. Follow these steps to become a political scientist.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Become a current events expert. The best way to enter the field of political science is to understand the contemporary political world. Analyzing today's conflicts will provide you with a touchstone for the principles and histories that make up the study of political science.

  2. Step 2

Pick a general field of interest. You don't have to plunge into a doctoral dissertation at first, but you should get a clear idea of your area of interest. Whether it's local American electoral politics or Chinese political economy, having an idea of what you want to study will help you advance.

  3. Step 3

Earn a master's degree. Although it might seem counterintuitive, you don't need to earn a master's degree in political science to become a political scientist. Political philosophy, economics and sociology are acceptable academic segues into the larger field of political science.

  4. Step 4

Get some experience. After earning a master's degree, you can either begin studying for your Ph.D. or work in the field or pursue a crossover of the two. Consider think-tank positions, government jobs and opportunities with non-governmental organizations to help you become a successful political scientist.
