How to Find a Gynecologist for a Teen
The old rule of thumb where women didn't need to see a gynecologist until they became sexually active or turned 18 has gone the way of the poodle skirt and the belted sanitary napkin. The American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians recommends a girl's first visit take place between 13 to 15 years of age. Talk to your daughter, advising her that you want to get a head start on pregnancy and disease prevention by taking her to a gynecologist. Educate her while still encouraging abstinence. Discuss what will likely take place during her first visit. Generally, a history and a chance to talk about sex without the parents present is all that's involved along with vaccination of the new cervical cancer vaccine if she hasn't already had it.

Let her help choose her own doctor. You might adore the OB/GYN who delivered your children or who was your rock during a breast cancer scare or when you went through postpartum depression years ago. But to your daughter, your OB might seem old and out of touch. If she shows any resistance to seeing your doctor, respect her feelings and seek out the kind of gynecologist she'll feel comfortable around.

Do your research. There may be another gynecologist in your OB/GYN's practice whom your daughter would better relate to. Talk to the mothers of your daughter's friends, your doctor and the school nurse or pediatrician for recommendations for teen-friendly gynecologists. Check your insurance provider's website to read the bios of gynecologists covered under your plan.
