Hygiene is from a Greek word meaning "health." To practice good hygiene is preventive health and promoting health. One way to prevent medical problems is to keep clean and this includes cleaning a hairbrush. All sorts of microscopic bacteria can build up on a hairbrush. Here are steps for cleaning a hairbrush to practice good hygiene.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean hair out of the hairbrush. Use a fork to pull the hairs out that are wound up around the bristles. Scrape the fork across the hairbrush. Wind the hairs up around the fork and pull. Use another hairbrush or comb to remove the leftover hairs by brushing the hairbrush. When the hairs pull out place them in a trash can.

  2. Step 2

Prepare a large bowl with warm soapy water. Place the hair brush in the warm soapy water. Dip the hair brush in and out of the water several times to remove the lint build up in the hairbrush. If there is additional hair, remove it with the fork or comb.

  3. Step 3

Sanitize the hairbrush through a heating process in the dishwasher. Place the hairbrush in the dishwasher. Add a teaspoon of bleach to the dishwasher along with the dish detergent. Sanitize the hairbrush on the quickest cycle. Select the dryer cycle to dry the hairbrush fully killing any leftover bacteria.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this cleaning process several times a year. Use your clean hair brush and stay germ free.

on 10/7/2007 I am a stylist, and in my salon I clean my brushes in antibacterial soap with the hotest water I can get. Then I soak them in a bleach solution of 1 1/3 cups of bleach to 1 gallon of hot water, for 20 min. Then rinse them and let them dry. This is the Health and Safety Regulations for the State of Texas for all reuseable tools in the salons. They are then clean for the next client.
