How to Become a Veterinary Dermatologist

Being a veterinarian is a demanding but rewarding job. But veterinary medicine also has specialized areas just as the field of human medicine does. One such specialized area is animal dermatology. To become a veterinary dermatologist, one must first go through the same schooling as that a regular veterinarian. But once completed, the person who wants to be an animal dermatologist has a few more steps. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend four years of veterinary school. Even though you plan to concentrate on a specialized area of veterinary medicine, you still need to know everything a regular veterinarian knows. Become a member of a national veterinary medicine association.

    • 2

Complete a 1-year rotating internship and residency program in dermatology and allergy. The residency is a 3-year program offered at some college and universities. For 30 of the 36 months, you participate in a clinical setting, see cases and compose reports.

    • 3

Submit case reports and cases seen with your mentor to the American College of Animal Dermatology. You also need to present your residency project at the annual meeting of the American College of Animal Dermatology.

    • 4

Conduct original research in the field of animal dermatology, and publish findings in a peer-reviewed journal. You accomplish this during your 3-year residency. Candidates devote 6 months of their residency programs to this process.

    • 5

Meet all American College of Veterinary Medicine credentials by completing all the steps and then passing the rigorous examination covering all aspects of animal dermatology and allergy. Upon passing, you become a board-certified animal dermatologist.

    • 6

Continue attending seminars throughout your career. Join the American Association of Veterinary Dermatology. Give lectures. Visit other animal dermatology practices.
