How to Be a Boxer

Becoming a boxer is one of the most difficult athletic challenges you can undertake. Boxing requires strength, fitness and a determination to persevere through difficult training and lots of hard knocks. However, with the right outlook and approach you can become skilled enough to hold your own in the ring, like a boxing pro. Follow these steps to learn how.

Instructions

    • 1

Get in shape. Boxing requires that you be strong and in excellent cardiovascular shape. You need to be able to sustain a very high heart rate for long periods of time while throwing strong punches and blocking with solid arms. Get in shape like the pros with a jump rope and a local gym until you're at the point where you feel comfortable with your level of physical fitness.

    • 2

Drop some weight. Boxing is largely about weight class. Five pounds can be the difference between a comfortable weight class and a nearly impossible challenge. Ideally, you should lose about eight percent of your normal, healthy weight to be in good boxing shape.

    • 3

Take a class to learn the basics. Before you begin working with a dedicated coach, you should be a master at jabs, uppercuts and footwork. A good class will teach you these basics so you don't have to waste time and money with a seasoned coach.

    • 4

Find a professional boxing coach. Taking it to the next level requires an experienced coach. Most coaches are former boxers themselves and can give you an abundance of information and technique to improve your skill. Ask your local gym for coach references.

    • 5

Start fighting. Begin sparring with training partners to get the hang of being in a fighting environment. Eventually, however, you will have to leave the nest and enter a competitive amateur boxing association. This will get you pitted against other serious boxers who won't restrain themselves when it comes time to fight.
