Step 1
Get the right fit. Ballet shoes are quite similar to regular shoes in terms of fit. While there is a conception that ballet shoes should be bought small because they stretch, they only stretch about a quarter of a shoe size. So, it's better to go with a good-feeling fit than trying to guess about future shrinking.

Step 2
Decide between canvas and leather, the two most common materials for ballet shoes. While leather shoes are considered tougher, cooler and more adaptable to the feet, canvas will be more regular from pair to pair and will also suit heavier dancers better.
-
Step 3
Think about full sole or split sole shoes. Each type has its own disadvantages and advantages and much of the difference is a matter of preference. Full sole shoes are generally a bit cheaper, while split soles hug the arches of your foot more when you point. However, try both kinds out for yourself so you make the right decision for you.

Step 4
Buy casual ballet-style shoes. For days out of the dance studio, ballet-style shoes are a nice way to keep your feet in familiar form while looking good. You can find ballet-style shoes at most popular shoe stores, or you can look online at outlets such as Nextag.
