It is difficult to remove all AOL components from a computer. Even after you uninstall AOL, pieces of it can remain and keep popping up. The only sure way to entirely eliminate it is to reinstall Windows and install only your desired programs. But before going that route, use the following steps to eliminate AOL from a computer. Read on to learn more.

From Quick Guide: AOL Internet Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write down your AOL user name and password if you can't remember them. You may need them in the future if you encounter any problems.

  2. Step 2

Cancel your AOL account and subscription, if you have one. Click on "AOL Help," "AOL Customer Service" or call AOL directly to submit your cancellation.

  3. Step 3

Choose "Start" and "Control Panel" on your computer. Select "Add/Remove" programs.

  4. Step 4

Select the version(s) of AOL you want uninstalled. Choose "Change/Remove."

  5. Step 5

Indicate if you want any of the email or downloaded files that you have saved in your Personal Filing Cabinet or Downloaded Files. If you indicate you wish to keep them, these files will be copied to new Desktop folders.

  6. Step 6

Follow any additional prompts you receive. If you encounter any problems in this process, search AOL Help or contact AOL Customer Service.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contact AOL if you aren't able to eliminate AOL entirely from your computer. They have a program that can take over your computer and remove it for you.
  • An additional way to remove remaining unwanted AOL components is to Choose "Run," type in "regedit," press "Enter" to load Registry Editor, press "Ctrl+F" to open the search bar and type in "AOL" and push "Enter." Delete any AOL keys you find in the system.
  • If you are still unable to entirely eliminate AOL components from your computer, then you may want a professional computer repair person to remove them rather than trying it yourself.
