Every once in a while a pet throws up on the carpet or your favorite couch. Removing vomit from carpet or upholstery is tricky business and people are often left with permanent stains. But with the right treatment you can minimize the stain and make your carpet or couch as good as new. Follow these steps to clean pet vomit in your home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper towels
  • Spatula
  • Sponges
  • Bowl of soapy water
  • Brush for scrubbing
  • Vacuum
  1. Step 1

Check the material of your carpet or couch to see if it is safe to get it wet. Some materials, like wool, are not water safe. If your material is not water safe, read the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. There are special carpet cleaning solutions for wool rugs and carpets.

  2. Step 2

Act as soon as your pet throws up or you spot the vomit. Pick up the solid parts of the vomit using paper towels, a fabric towel or spatula. Do not press down on the vomit. Blot the damp spot with a sponge or paper towels once all the bulk has been removed.

  3. Step 3

Use a dish washing liquid to prepare soapy water--it is the most effective method to cut the stains. Take a new sponge and immerse it in warm soapy water. Rub the affected area until the stain is gone. Rinse the sponge a few times and repeat for an effective cleaning. Use a hard brittle brush if needed for a good scrubbing.

  4. Step 4

Clean dried vomit. Do not scrub the vomit if it has already dried. Use a metal or plastic scraper to remove the sticky part and continue with the warm soapy water treatment in Step 2.

  5. Step 5

Use dry towels to absorb any remaining liquid. Let the area dry. Spread deodorizer on the spot and vacuum the area thoroughly.

  6. Step 6

Rent a steam cleaner from a hardware store if you need to a more thorough cleaning. Hire a professional service if your couch or carpet is antique or valuable.

Tips & Warnings
  • An alternative treatment is to sprinkle baking soda or salt on the area and rub with warm soapy water.
  • For stubborn stains, use a stain remover product according to manufacturer's directions.
