Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Get some ideas for deck railings. Find magazines that feature articles on adding beauty to the exterior of homes. You can also find magazines that focus on great home designs. You'll also want to check the Internet for ideas.

  2. Step 2

Pick out a group of designs that you find particularly appealing. You've probably never really thought a lot about the kinds of deck railings that you like and which ones you don't care for. Now that you have a group of deck railings that you know you like, you can draw inspiration from them.

  3. Step 3

Take a piece of paper and draw out sketches of any of the designs that come to mind after you've looked at the group of deck railings that you like.

  4. Step 4

Take the drawings outside where your deck is (or will it will be if you haven't built it yet). Make sure that the designs you've made fit in with the exterior of your home. You won't want there to be a drastic change of style between the house and the deck railings.

  5. Step 5

Pick out the design that fits your home best.

  6. Step 6

Measure the length that the deck railing will be. Also, be sure to note how high the railing will be when it's built.

  7. Step 7

Make a scale drawing of the deck railings using the measurements you just took and the design that you liked best.
