Chalk isn't just for blackboards anymore. It's hard to believe, but you can use chalk to accomplish a variety of home maintenance projects. By spending very little money on a box of chalk, you would be surprised at just how far a dollar can stretch when you put a few sticks to good use. Here are some ways to make chalk work for you as you maintain your home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Rust-proof your tools. A piece of chalk in your toolbox absorbs excess moisture, keeping rust away. This will keep both the toolbox and the tools rust-free.
Step2
Sprinkle some chalk dust to keep things clean. Jewelry, marble and metal can all be cleaned by grinding chalk into dust. Dip a clean, moist rag into the chalk and gently wipe the surface. Buff the item afterwards for a shinier finish. Additionally, place a piece of chalk in your jewelry box or silverware drawer to prevent both from tarnishing, again by absorbing excess moisture.
Step3
Add chalk to your laundry list. Use a piece of chalk to mark a collar ring, and it will also absorb the oils that hold the stain. This method can be used on just about any laundry item that has grease stains, including tablecloths. Rub the chalk into the stain before washing.
Step4
Apply it to the end of your screwdriver. When you have a home-maintenance job that requires you to use your screwdriver, rub a piece of chalk onto the tip to keep it from slipping.
Step5
Make a chalk hanging for your closet. If you want to keep moisture at bay in your closet, tie a bundle of a dozen pieces or so together and hang inside the space. The chalk's absorbent qualities will get the job done.
Step6
Get rid of scuff marks. If your ceiling or walls have scuff marks that you just don't have the time to repaint, choose a color of chalk that matches the color and cover it up.
Step7
Exterminate those ants. Hold off on calling the pros by lining your home's entry points with chalk. Chalk contains calcium carbonate, which is a natural ant repellent. You can also use chalk dust in your garden to keep the ants and slugs away.
